Most visits home are already half-booked before the travelling starts: a wedding, a function, relatives who are expecting you. What is left is usually a narrow window, and it is easy to waste it on the road.
We plan domestic journeys around what is fixed. Short routes where the days are short, longer ones where there is room, and transport arranged so nobody is negotiating with a driver at seven in the morning.
